Just wondering why the cost of plane tickets have gone up so much?
Last year, in August/09, my husband and I flew from St. John's, NL to Indianapolis, IND which is my husband's hometown. The total cost for both of us was $1100, taxes in. The tickets were booked in July, only a month before the flight. This year however, we are planning to go back in June and we have been pricing plane tickets on every site imaginable and they are all $2000 for both of us. The cheapest we have found is $1800, the most expensive being $6000!! Why are the tickets so much more this year, and what would you recommend for us to do? Would it be wise to book the tickets months in advance or just a little before we go? We're trying to keep it at $1200 as we are both students. Thanks.

Consolidation of airlines, rising fuel costs, fewer flights because of fewer flyers(there's a desert in Arizona with 100's of airlines being stored). I can't say what you should do. You could look at the flights and see how many seats are remaining. If there are a lot left, the flight could be cancelled. If there are only a few left, they probably won't go down. Anything in between is a crap shoot. If I were you I'd get an alert from the airline or Kayak.com letting you know if they go down over the next few weeks. If they don't I think I'd book.
